In this weekly feature, which will be posted every Thursday, I will talk about a current listing of mine. I’ll explain why it’s a good pick-up and why it might still be for sale on eBay in an attempt to help other people understand the process of selling on eBay and the items I pick up. Please comment and let me know what you think!

St. Louis in a Box eBay Listing

St Louis Game (1) St Louis Game (2) St Louis Game (3) St Louis Game (4)

St. Louis In-A-Box is a monopoly-style board game from a company that releases a lot of these specific city and college themed games called Late for the Sky. Some of their games go for decent money. They have an entire dog breed related line of games that sell pretty easily. The City-in-a-Box series are a little tougher sells.

The biggest issue with selling these games it that we are competing with Late for the Sky themselves. They sell their City-in-a-Box series of games for $24.95 on their website. Of course, that doesn’t include shipping. Another issue is that we cannot use the word Monopoly in our listing titles. People will report listings that use that in games that aren’t actually Monopoly licensed games.

This copy is in pretty good condition. It doesn’t look like it has been played and the box has very little shelf wear. Condition on these newer games can affect price more seriously than older games, especially on games that can still be bought new, so if you find copies of these games that are in really poor condition, they would be very hard to sell. I would pass on those, unless they are dog breed ones, and even then, I wouldn’t pay much.

The reason this game has not sold yet probably has to do with my price point. I had it listed for $19.99 plus shipping. I reduced my price to $14.99 and I do have a best offer on this item, so we’ll see how quickly it takes to sell now. The demand on these games is also low.

With this price point, I’m look at my pure profit to be anywhere between 7 and 10 dollars. The reason for this range is that I may decide to take a lower offer just to get it off my shelf. I have a lot of games that need the space, plus I’m always buying, so I want to make sure my inventory keeps turning over.

UPDATE on last week’s eBay Highlight – Balderdash

My copy of Balderdash sold Sunday night. I immediately put up the other copy I had in my inventory and raised my price by a dollar, and that one sold within a couple of hours. I don’t have any Balderdash in my inventory now. One shipped quite a distance away and I made less money on it than the other one, which shipped within Texas, but total, my pure profit on both games together totaled $12.30.

Balderdash Listing on eBay

Balderdash is the original classic Bluffing game. This version was released in 1984. Also, be on the look-out for Beyond Balderdash which was released in 1997. Both of these sell relatively easy.

The biggest issue with games like this is that they weigh quite a bit. The shipping weight on this comes in just under 4 lbs, so the 4 lb. rate is what we have to go with. Balderdash is also not a super rare game, so there are always quite a few up for sale on eBay. As a result, the value of them is not really that high. One of the things I do to stand out from the crowd is to offer Free Shipping to domestic customers. This gets my listing higher rated on the search. I also have it listed for $18.99 (with free shipping), which puts me on the lower end of the pricing for this item.

If this copy had been in better condition, my price point would have been higher, but the box has some pretty visible issues. I rated it VG (very good) because the interior contents look really good and the insert is still in the box (a lot of games don’t have inserts!), but the damage to the box is very clear to see in the pictures, which makes it harder to sell.

The reason this game has not sold yet has to do with supply. Balderdash is one of those very competitive games. There’s a lot of them out there, and there’s quite a bit of demand, so there’s plenty of people posting them. It will eventually sell and I just have to be patient and not lower my price point, because it’s already very good.

With this price point, and free shipping, I’m look at my pure profit to be anywhere between 4 dollars and 7 dollars. The reason for this range is that where I have to ship it will impact my profit. If it’s closer to me, I’ll make more. That’s a risk you run with free shipping and something that needs to be kept in mind when listing an item with free shipping on eBay. Make sure you’ll be okay with the lower end of the profit.
